D7 Visa – Residence Permit in Portugal for Foreigners with Passive Income 

Who can apply: Religious individuals, retirees, or holders of passive income who wish to reside in Portugal can apply for the appropriate residence visa.

Required documentation:

  • National visa application form which is available on the Consulate or VFS website.
  • Two identical passport-size photos (3×4), recent and in good condition for identification.
  • The passport must be valid for more than three months after the planned return date.
  • Copy of the passport (biographical data and pages with stamps).
  • Valid travel insurance covering medical expenses, including urgent care and possible repatriation in case of death.
  • Criminal record certificate.
  • Request for consultation of the Portuguese criminal record by AIMA.

Proof of means of subsistence:

  • 1st adult (applicant): 100% of the current minimum wage (€870) = €10,440/year
  • 2nd or more adults: 50% of the current minimum wage (€435) = €5,220/year
  • Children and dependents under 18 or adult children in care: 30% of the current minimum wage (€261) = €3,132/year

Proof of accommodation:

This can be provided through one of the following documents:

  • Housing lease agreement made by the applicant.
  • Invitation letter from a citizen legally residing in Portugal, declaring they will host the applicant during the required period.
  • In the absence of the above documents, temporary accommodation can be proven through a hotel reservation for at least one week.

Specific documents:

  • Religious individuals: Certificate from the church or community they belong to, recognized by Portuguese law (nominal invitation). Declaration from the respective church or community in the country of origin, with a notarized signature.
  • Retirees/Pensioners: Document proving pension amount and income tax return.
  • Passive Income Holders: Proof of income from movable or immovable assets, intellectual property, or financial investments (income tax return, partnership or rental agreement, recent bank statements, or other documents).

Fees:

  • Residence visa: €90 (euros)

*Processing fee in local currency will depend on the euro exchange rate.

Processing time: Approximately 60 days

The procedure involves two stages of document submission to complete the visa process: First stage: Submission at the Consulate (or VFS). Second stage: Submission to AIMA.
