D2 Visa – Portugal Residency for Entrepreneurs and Independent Professionals

The D2 Visa is designed for entrepreneurs and independent professionals from non-EU/EEA/Swiss countries who wish to establish themselves in Portugal. This visa allows entry into the country and the subsequent application for a residence permit.

Who can apply?

All foreign citizens who are not nationals of EU, EEA, or Swiss member states and intend to pursue an independent activity or invest in Portugal

Where and when to apply?

The application must be submitted at the Portuguese consular posts or VFS centers with jurisdiction in the applicant's country of residence.

Required documentation:

  • Personal Documentation:
    • Completed visa application form;
    • The passport must be valid for more than three months after the planned return date;
    • Two recent passport-sized photos;
    • Valid travel insurance covering medical expenses, including urgent care and possible repatriation in case of death;
    • Criminal record certificate from the country of origin or residence for over one year;
    • Request for consultation of the Portuguese criminal record by AIMA;
    • Proof of accommodation;
    • Proof of means of subsistence.
  • For Independent Professional Activity:
    • Partnership agreement or proposal/contract for service provision in liberal professions;
    • When applicable, a declaration from the competent authority verifying the requirements to practice the profession in Portugal.
  • For Entrepreneurial Immigrants:
    • Declaration indicating the completion or intention to carry out an investment operation in Portugal, detailing its nature, value, and duration;
    • Comprovativo de operações de investimento efetuadas ou de meios financeiros disponíveis em Portugal, incluindo os obtidos junto a instituições financeiras portuguesas, e a intenção de proceder a um investimento devidamente descrito e identifica

Fees:

  • Residence visa: €90 (euros)

*Processing fee in local currency will depend on the euro exchange rate.

Processing time: Approximately 60 days

The procedure involves two stages of document submission to complete the visa process: First stage: Submission at the Consulate (or VFS). Second stage: Submission to AIMA.
