D1 Visa – Professional Work Visa

The D1 Visa is for individuals from non-EU/EEA/Swiss countries who have a valid work contract for over 9 months under a subordinate employment regime. This visa allows entry into Portugal to work for a hiring company.

Who can apply?

Foreign nationals who have a valid work contract with a Portuguese company for over 9 months and will work as employees of the hiring company.

Where and when to apply?

The application must be submitted at the Portuguese consular posts or VFS centers with jurisdiction in the applicant's country of residence.

Required documentation:

Documents provided by the employer:

  • Signed work contract.
  • A letter from the company explaining why hiring the applicant is essential for the business and highlighting the applicant’s qualifications.
  • Opinion issued by the IEFP (Portuguese Employment and Training Institute) on the work contract.

Documents from the employee:

  • Completed visa application form;
  • The passport must be valid for more than three months after the planned return date;
  • Two recent passport-sized photos;
  • Valid travel insurance covering medical expenses, including urgent care and possible repatriation in case of death;
  • Criminal record certificate from the country of origin or residence for over one year;
  • Request for consultation of the Portuguese criminal record by AIMA;
  • Proof of accommodation;
  • Proof of means of subsistence.
  • Proof of qualifications to exercise the profession, if it is regulated in Portugal (if applicable). (se aplicável).

Meios de subsistência:

  • Prova de meios de subsistência pode ser feita com o contrato de trabalho ou promessa de contrato. Pode ser apresentado um termo de responsabilidade da empresa contratante.

Fees:

  • Residence visa: €90 (euros)

Processing time: Approximately 60 days

The procedure involves two stages of document submission to complete the visa process: First stage: Submission at the Consulate (or VFS). Second stage: Submission to AIMA.
