The Job Seeker Visa is intended for citizens of countries outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland who wish to enter Portugal to seek employment opportunities. This visa allows entry into the country and the subsequent application for a residence permit, should an employment relationship be established.

Who can apply?

All foreign citizens who are not nationals of EU Member States, the European Economic Area or Switzerland, and who intend to seek work in Portugal.

Where and when to apply?

The application must be made at Portuguese consular posts or at the VFS (Virtual Services Office) with jurisdiction in the applicant's country of residence. Before scheduling an appointment, it is necessary to submit a declaration of interest to the Institute of Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP).

Required Documentation

Personal Documentation:

  • Completed and signed visa application form;
  • Passport valid for more than three months after the expected return date;
  • Two recent passport-sized photographs;
  • Valid travel insurance that covers medical expenses, including emergency care and repatriation;
  • Criminal record certificate from the country of origin or where you have resided for more than one year, with an Apostille of The Hague or legalized;
  • Application for consultation of the Portuguese criminal record by AIMA;
  • Proof of accommodation conditions;
  • Proof of means of subsistence amounting to at least three times the guaranteed minimum monthly wage.

Specific Documentation:

  • Declaration from the individual indicating the conditions of the planned stay;
  • Proof of expression of interest for registration with the IEFP (Portuguese Employment and Vocational Training Institute).

Validity and Extension of Visa

The job seeker visa is granted for 120 days , and can be extended for a further 60 days upon presentation of proof of registration with the IEFP (Portuguese Employment and Vocational Training Institute). If you are unable to find employment during this period, you must leave the country and can only apply for a new visa for this purpose one year after the previous visa expires.

  • Residence visa: €90 (euros).
    Processing fee in local currency will depend on the euro exchange rate.

Processing Time

The processing time is approximately 60 days and comprises two stages: the first carried out by the Consulate (or VFS) and the second by AIMA.
